A contractor's journey to self-mastery requires discipline, integrity, and respect. Welcome to Hammer and Grind. What's going on, everybody? I'm your host, Brad Hebner. I'm here with my co-host, Eric Triplets. And welcome to Hammer and Grind, the podcast built for contractors by contractors. Since this is the first episode, at the end, we'll ask for you to leave a review and let us know what you think. But tell us if we're doing a good job or if Eric talks too much, probably going to be the latter. But this is episode number one. What is hammer and grind?

    0:55

What is hammer and grind? Let's talk about that, Brad.

    0:58

That's a great question. So I want to start off by asking you a question. Do you remember the very, very first time that you and I interacted?

    1:09

I really don't. Not the first time. I don't. Why don't you refresh my memory?

    1:15

There is a certain contractor Facebook group that you and I are both in. And someone posted a question about their marketing. I think it was about a vehicle wrap. And I had posted a response, my opinion on it. And I think you liked it and maybe even commented on it. I don't remember the exact interaction, but I thought, who's this guy? And I went and looked up your Facebook profile and I was like, oh, this guy's legit. Like he owns a nice. company. He's a legit dude. And that was the very first time that I figured out or discovered who Eric Triplett was.

    1:52

Interesting. I think we've had a lot of those run-ins.

    1:56

Yeah, I would say more than a lot, actually.

    1:59

Okay, well, that's interesting. But, you know, so here's the thing. First of all, I want everyone to know, I'm grind and you're hammer. Can we just get that established right off the get-go? Yeah, I think that's fair. I think people are going to figure that out in the long run. You know, when this whole thing kind of came around and you started talking about doing a podcast, you know, it got me excited because in my career, I've been doing it 20 years, right? And so I'm always grinding it out. I'm always, you know, trying to hustle and get to the next level. And so people around me, they realize that. And I have a ton of people always asking me like, hey, what did you do when you began here? What did you do when you began there? I have a lot of these same conversations over and over again. And this is a fun way to compile everything and bookmark things in a certain way and be able to really share some deep thoughts on the beginning, the journey, the grind.

    2:54

You're right. I approached you about doing this podcast. Like I said, you and I are in a few different contractor groups together, and we seem to hit it off and kind of develop this relationship. I think it'd be interesting for the listeners to know that we've never actually met in person yet. So it's kind of a unique dynamic. For sure. And hopefully our personalities will come out over the podcast. I think people will realize that we really don't like each other.

    3:19

I was just going to say that. It's so funny you said that. If people realized how often I was annoyed at you and pissed off, they'd be like, why are they doing this? But let me talk about that. I want to talk about that. So it's interesting because I think every time I'm pissed at you. Which is, I don't know, pretty often. It's like opening me up to a different thing. It's like, I'd like to think that I'm humble enough to go like, maybe his opinion has some validity or it matters and maybe I can. So I think that you're insightful in a lot of things that I'm not good at. And so when I'm mad at you, I feel like maybe I'm mad at myself and trying to figure it out.

    3:58

Yeah. So that's why I'm the hammer. My personality, former Marine D personality, I just want to hammer it down. Just shove it down your throat. very opinionated. Even when I'm wrong, I can shove that wrong opinion down your throat pretty hard.

    4:14

That's, dude, the most recent time that I was pissed off at you, that's exactly what happened. I was like, he's so wrong, yet he's speaking like he knows what the shit he's talking about. And I'm like, he's wrong here. And then like five minutes later, you send me a polo back. You're like, okay, I changed my mind. And I was like, what? What is happening right now? But listen, this is the hammer and grind to me is about sharing the journey to self-mastery because, you know, I'm always trying to get better. Dude, I've screwed up so much, you know, and I've learned from my mistakes, but I watch when other people screw up and I try not to make those mistakes. And this is an opportunity for me to basically fall on the sword and tell everybody how much I screw up and learn from it, right?

    5:01

Yeah, I mean, this... For me, the reason why I wanted to start this podcast is, one, our dynamic is unique, and I don't think you're going to hear any other dynamic like this out there on different podcasts. But two, I wanted to create a community that other contractors could be a part of. And as corny as this may sound, a community that's safe where we're not ridiculing each other. We're encouraging each other. We're trying to lift each other up and provide each other with valuable information. There's tons of stuff I can learn from you. There's probably a few things you can learn from me. And, you know, we hope that our listeners out there will be able to gather some knowledge and help them in their business as well.

    5:44

Yeah, I mean, I think, again, if I just really had to put a circle around what this is, it's just about helping other contractors be successful in their business. But, you know, it's really important to me as well is, you know, in my career, I got fat, I got complacent, I got slow. I got cancer. Business can run you through the ringer, you know? And if you don't wrap your arms around the whole package and try and remain balanced or counterbalanced in the way things work, a business can just run you ragged. And so I want to make sure I've been happily married for 25 years. I want to kind of, I'm going to sprinkle some of that in whether you like it or not. Health and wellness, I want people to stay healthy. I want people to make money. And I feel like I've been beat up and punched in the face by all those circumstances.

    6:36

Yeah, and I think everyone experiences those. I mean, I've probably, in my mind, I've probably sold my business 567,000 times.

    6:45

I think you sold it a couple of days ago in your head, didn't you?

    6:48

I did, yeah. I did, actually. But, I mean, that's the reality of businesses. I mean, some people have awesome businesses that they enjoy, and it doesn't control them, and that's awesome. You know, maybe we can have them on the show as a guest and learn something from them. But I just think that we can all learn from each other. And one thing I want to say that's important here is that you and I both are not trying to say that we're the absolute experts in these, you know, in the construction industry and that everything we say, if you follow it to a T, you're going to have great success. I mean, that's not what we're trying to do. We're trying to share our journey, our failures, our successes, and hopefully that helps others.

    7:29

Listen, Brad, the reality is like you could pick out, you know, the most kick-ass businessman, you know, with like the perfect formula. And then, but you take that formula and you apply it in a different community, a different place. They'll always say like, I can go to any place in the world and dominate with this formula, right? That, you know, a lot of master coaches would say stuff like that, but it's not, it's not really accurate because the dynamics of. Your employees can change and the dynamics of relationships and friendships and all those things kind of have to fall in place. It's not just like read my manual and go from A to Z and you're going to be successful. It's like you have to be able to navigate the different realities that we all face. You know, different personalities, different mindsets, all this stuff. It's all matters.

    8:14

Absolutely. Yeah, I couldn't have said any better. Well, I mean, based on that, Eric, you got any final thoughts for this episode?

    8:21

I'm super pumped about the ability to get our thoughts down and just in an archive where people can go back and check on things. And I'm super excited about the podcast. Yeah,

    8:32

me too. I mean, we've been working on this for a few weeks and trying to get this thing launched. And I'm super excited about the future and what can happen with this. And I'll be honest with the listeners, we don't really have a set plan of what we're going to do. We're winging this a little bit to see what comes along.
